Elemental Compliance Screening with Handheld XRF
Meeting the legislative challenge
Governments worldwide now have legislation aimed at reducing the health and environmental impacts of a broad variety of harmful substances used in consumer goods and other manufactured products. These regulations also include procedures for proper disposal of products at end of life. Well-known heavy elements such as lead figure prominently in these legislative actions and therefore create the need for widespread elemental testing to meet requirements. This paper reviews product screening test requirements for major directives such as REACH and RoHS and reviews the spectrometric instruments — with a specific emphasis on hand held ED-XRF — that are available to meet governmental requirements.
